A Better Faith (Hebrews 11:1-12, 17-38)

May 10, 2015 Speaker: Rev. Dave Dorst Series: Jesus Is Better - A Series on the Book of Hebrews

Topic: Sermons Passage: Hebrews 11:1–11:38

During an oral report in seminary describing a paper that I had written on the story of Samson, the professor and fellow students had some follow-up questions. At some point, my professor asked me a question that I wasn’t really prepared for: “So is Samson in heaven?” I mentally scanned through his life and said something to the effect of, “Well, he was a pretty disobedient guy. On the one hand he was chosen by the Lord to deliver Israel from her enemies and he accomplished that to a degree. But he never listened to authority or acted in a godly manner. I don’t know, who am I to judge?” Of course, what I had forgotten is that Samson is listed in the Hebrews 11 “Hall of Faith” along with Abraham, Moses, David, and many of the other “heroes” of the Old Testament. He is probably the one that we look at and think, “Why is he in there? He was a pretty sorry excuse for a man of God.” (Of course, we may wonder why the prostitute and the guy who sacrificed his daughter are in there as well!) But they’re in there for a reason. Come Sunday to reflect on the whole chapter and what the writer is telling us about the faith of the saints.

If you have a mom or your wife is a mom, please don’t forget Mother’s Day this Sunday!
