The Covenant Renewed (Exodus 34:1-35)

August 7, 2016 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Exodus - The Glory of the Lord

Topic: Sermons Passage: Exodus 34:1–35

It’s good to be back preaching this week, but it’s hard to believe it’s August already. Where is the summer going? As one of those rare people who actually likes the heat, I want summer to stay as long as possible. I love to feel the sun shine on my face and let the heat melt the stress away. This week I’ve been wondering if Moses might feel the same way. You see, we’re in Exodus 34 this Sunday and this is the famous passage where, after meeting with God, Moses’ face shines with the reflection of God’s Glory. Apparently, his face was shining so brightly that the people were afraid of him and he had to put a veil over his face when speaking with them.

Well, no worries, I won’t be wearing a veil anytime soon and if my face ever does shine, it will probably mean a poor choice of sunscreen. But not here. You see in the last chapter, Moses asked God to do a few things. He asked God for His presence among them and he asked God to “show me Your Glory.” Well, I’ve often heard the saying, “Be careful what you pray for because God may give it to you.” And that’s exactly what happens in Exodus 34 — God answers both those prayers. And the answers to those prayers is scaring the living daylights out of all the people. God’s answers prove to be far more powerful than anyone expected.

Is that still true? Is God’s response to His people still more powerful than we expect? How is the knowledge of God and His Word received today? Does it scare you some? It should. Maybe you find it a comfort? It should be that too. However, if it elicits no reaction from you whatsoever, then something’s wrong and you have a serious problem. We’ll look at God’s answers and God’s demands this Sunday and how should we respond to both of those things. Should be interesting! Hopefully, I’ll see you there! Dr. Dave

Don’t forget we have the Lord’s Supper this Sunday immediately followed by a Fellowship Lunch to welcome Frank and Sarah Wang! Should be great!
