The Promise of His Birth (Isaiah 7:10-17; 9:6)

December 4, 2016 Speaker: Dr. David Silvernail Series: Christmas in Isaiah - Advent 2016

Topic: Sermons Passage: Isaiah 7:10–17, Isaiah 9:6

We are now well into the Advent season and I’m just not ready. It feels like the Fall just flew by and I haven’t even blown all the leaves in my yard over to the neighbors yet (no, I don’t really do that). And yet Christmas lights are starting to show up in the neighborhood, we’ve put up the Nativity Scene at the office, and everyone’s updating their Amazon Wish Lists.

Of course, if you turn on the Nightly News, you would think the whole world is falling apart. Wildfires (aren’t they supposed to happen in the summer?), plane crashes, terrorism, the Syrian Conflict, police shootings, bird flu, and all the drama of a crazy election season. It’s amazing that people are even willing to leave their homes.

Well, the Prophet Isaiah would have felt right at home. He lived in a time when everyone in Jerusalem really felt that the world was falling apart. The evil King Ahaz was on the throne, they were surrounded by enemies on all sides, and the threat of war and exile was on the horizon. No one wanted to come out of their homes.

And into this maelstrom of national fear and anxiety, God makes another promise. We’re currently in an Advent sermon series on “Christmas in Isaiah.” From now through January 1st, we’ll be looking at six promises from the Prophet Isaiah that directly relate to the person and work of Jesus Christ. This Sunday we’ll be looking at “The Promise of His Birth” from Isaiah 7:10-25 and 9:6.

How will the birth of a baby reassure the people? How will it comfort them in the midst of great fear? And what does that same promise mean to us today? Does it still bring reassurance? We’re traveling back to the Old Testament time right before the exile. A time of great stress and overly anxious hearts. Let’s learn together how the messianic promises in Isaiah can comfort our hearts this Advent season.

Please plan on coming at 9:30 this Sunday for our Congregational Meeting! We’ll be presenting the 2016 Annual Report, the 2017 Budget, and voting on the Pastor’s calls. It’s important stuff so we hope to see you there! Dr. Dave
