PHPC in the Leesburg Christmas Parade

Potomac Hills will have a float in the Leesburg Christmas Parade this year, Saturday, December 13th at 6 pm.  We will have a gingerbread house on a truck with Christmas music playing, and we'll have many volunteers handing out candy and invitations to church.  Sign-up on the City if you'd like to help.  There will be a decorating and planning time the week b...

There are a few types of people I'm uncomfortable around -- one is the skeptic, that guy who's always giving you a reason, a rationale, or a hypothetical situation showing why what you said / think / believe is obviously wrong (and subtly calling you an idiot in the process). The other person who makes me uncomfortable is the know-it-all, the legalist, that guy who asks a...

It's good to be back, though upon returning to the office today, I felt so far behind with all the work that needs to be done. Whenever I've been away, upon my return, I always feel like I need to visit 10 people, call 20, write 30, complete all sorts of administrative tasks, and prepare to preach & teach three times on Sunday, and so on and so forth. Perhaps you feel ...

As I said last week, I love Advent and the whole Christmas season. I enjoy Christmas movies and Christmas music (yes, we start early, deal with it). I enjoy seeing all the lights and decorations people put around their homes. Just a sentimentalist, I guess. I like almost all of the Christmas traditions, both in the church and at home. I like Advent Wreaths and Christmas Ca...

"I'm dreaming of a White Christmas ..." -- yes, it's that time of year again! The Christmas season is one of my families favorite times of year. That's not too unusual, I hope -- for we love the buildup to Christmas as much as the actual day itself. One reason for this is because, over the years, we have tried to stress the season of Advent leading up to the celebration of...

Well, it's Thanksgiving Week and that means we're supposed to stop and give thanks for something more than the ability to shop until our brains hurt! Seriously, what are you thankful for this year? Beyond the usual " I'm thankful for my family, friends, pets, etc " (which are all good things), but what new or unique thing happened in your life this year that you should be ...

Thank you for praying! As most of you know by now, our daughter Rebecca delivered her firstborn son, George, three months early last Sunday. George is a teeny-tiny 1 lb, 6 oz, but he's doing well; as is Rebecca. The words I've heard used to describe George this week are "spunky," "scrappy," and "a real fighter" -- which leads me to believe Rebecca may need a lot more praye...

Well, we have a full plate this week! First we look at three parables, then a word about bringing out both old and new treasures, and finally we learn how Jesus is rejected by his hometown of Nazareth. So much Word of God... so little time! Yet what seems like a hodgepodge of biblical nuggets actually has a central theme running through it all: The Worth of the Kingdom. F...

This week we're back in Matthew 13, looking at another well-known parable of Jesus. This one looks simple on the surface, but as with most parables, seems to have a deeper meaning the longer you look at it. Once again, Jesus is using the parables to separate people into followers and non-followers, believers and unbelievers, friends and enemies. This is what makes the para...

This week we're in the middle of Matthew 13, at a unique passage where Jesus explains why He's preaching in parables. And it seems that He's intentionally making it hard for people to understand (I've been accused of doing that too!). Why would He do that? Wouldn't you think that He would want to make it easier for people to understand? The parables often seem simple at f...

Wow -- it's hard to believe that summer's almost over! Where did the time go? Can't I get away and go to the beach one more time? For most of us, the everyday routine returns with Labor Day. Dr. Dave, who, as was announced Sunday, is out for a few weeks to recharge, has a philosophy that ruling elders ought to preach from time to time. I think one reason he does this is so that we maintain an appreciation for the responsibility and difficulty of bringing the Word of God to the people of God week after week. So, you have me this week, and Mark Rist next week. ...

Weekly Thought: May 19, 2013

This week we're looking at one of the most well-known stories about Jesus -- calming the storm in Matthew 8. But a couple of odd things stand out. First of all, we know that at least four of the disciples were fishermen, so why would they ask a carpenter to help them? And second, Matthew says that the disciples marveled, Mark indicates that they were filled with fear, a...
