There are a few types of people I'm uncomfortable around -- one is the skeptic, that guy who's always giving you a reason, a rationale, or a hypothetical situation showing why what you said / think / believe is obviously wrong (and subtly calling you an idiot in the process). The other person who makes me uncomfortable is the know-it-all, the legalist, that guy who asks a question, not to find out the answer, but to demonstrate how much he knows (certainly more than you). I often fail to think of the right thing to say until well after the encounter is over. Thankfully, Jesus is far more perceptive and gracious than I am. In our passage this week, Matthew 22:23-40, Jesus encounters both sorts of men (possibly at a church picnic like we're having this Sunday) and Jesus answers them both in such a way that He's authoritative without being mean-spirited. I think we have a lot to learn from these encounters (well, at least I do). I'm looking forward to being together again and learning from Jesus. And I hope you are too. See you Sunday, Dr. Dave... Sunday: July 28, 2013

Posted July 23, 2013 |0 Comments

Dr. Dave, who, as was announced Sunday, is out for a few weeks to recharge, has a philosophy that ruling elders ought to preach from time to time. I think one reason he does this is so that we maintain an appreciation for the responsibility and difficulty of bringing the Word of God to the people of God week after week. So, you have me this week, and Mark Rist next week. We are in Matthew 10 where we have seen Jesus choose his 12 particular disciples (v. 1 - 4) and commission them (v. 5 - 15) to go out to Israel for him. But in this week's text (v. 16 - 23), Jesus warns them (and us) of difficulties and opposition which they/we will encounter. The kingdom is advancing into hostile territory. However, Jesus equips us for the task and encourages us to endure to the end. Hopefully, you all can endure to the end of my sermon, too. See you on Sunday. - Frank... Keep Reading

"School's out for the summer!" That song is cranking loud at my house, and I'm sure we're not the only ones excited. I hope your summer is shaping up to be a good mix of rest, family time, pursuing some life goals, and spiritual growth. And even though school is out, we'll still be looking for you at Harper Park Middle School every Sunday morning. I hope that you benefited from hearing Dr. Kooistra's missions presentation and his sermon on prayer last week. This week's sermon text is Matthew 9:1-8, where Jesus heals a paralytic. This is the third paralytic that we've heard about and the fifth account of Jesus healing in Matthew's gospel- so is there anything new we can learn from studying this? Well, Jesus does something much deeper than physical healing for this man, and it's worth diving into to find out how and why he does it. Join me as we study the Scriptures together! -Rev. Dorst... Sunday: Dr. Paul Kooistra (MTW)

Posted May 29, 2013 by: Dr. David Silvernail |0 Comments

We're taking a break from Matthew this week as we have the great privilege to hear from Dr. Paul Kooistra, the Coordinator for Mission to The World (the missions agency of the PCA). Dr. Kooistra will be speaking about MTW and the state of missions around the world during a combined teen/adult Sunday School, and then he will be preaching from James during the worship service. It's not often we get one of the real leaders in the PCA to come minister God's Word at our church. I encourage you to make every possible effort to be there! Additionally, I would ask that you pray for the pastors, elders, and deacons this weekend as we'll be away for our annual Officer Retreat. Dr. Kooistra will be teaching about grace to us as well, and trust me, we really need it! Pray that this is a profitable time for our leadership! Next week (June 9th), the Adult Bible Class will begin a summer journey through the Minor Prophets. Lots to learn from all those small books at the back of the Old Testament! Looking forward to another great Sunday! See you then, Dr. Dave... Keep Reading

Weekly Thought: May 19, 2013

Posted May 15, 2013 by: Dr. David Silvernail |0 Comments

This week we're looking at one of the most well-known stories about Jesus -- calming the storm in Matthew 8. But a couple of odd things stand out. First of all, we know that at least four of the disciples were fishermen, so why would they ask a carpenter to help them? And second, Matthew says that the disciples marveled, Mark indicates that they were filled with fear, and Luke combines the two. Why is it that this incident makes a deeper impression on the disciples than anything they've seen so far? Maybe their faith was being tested by their fear! We'll take a look at how faith and fear relate to each other. And so, as we approach this passage, once again, we have to ask the questions, "What does this teach us about faith?" and "What does this teach us about Jesus?" Come Sunday to find out more. See you then, Dr. Dave... Keep Reading
