Heart Prep for Sunday, June 11th
This has been a crazy week. I’ve been out most nights this week, and will be out every night next week. We’ve had graduations. There’s a wedding this weekend. And General Assembly starts next week … in Memphis. The sermon’s not done and I’m running out of time. So the anxiety level is a little high. You ever have a week like that? Maybe, like me, you’re having one right now. Whatever I’m stressing out about is often what I'm preaching bout. So, guess what? This week, we’re looking at Psalm 27 and “Prayer for our Anxiety.” Oh, good!
In his book, Feelings and Faith, Pastor Brian Borgman explains, “[Anxiety] is a crippling emotion that paralyzes us. It bogs us down emotionally, making us virtually useless for anything else. In addition, it leads to other sins ... lying, forgetting God, not trusting God, and not fearing God.” We don’t always recognize this tendency and, even when we do recognize it, we don’t always admit it. That’s why there’s so much to learn from Psalm 27.
We’re in our second week of a new sermon series, “Summer in the Psalms.” The Bible has much to say about fear, worry, and anxiety, and how they show up in the Christian life. King David faces it head on and fills this prayer with good counsel for each of us. I think it will be helpful. And if I can stop freaking out, then I’ll see you on Sunday, Dr. Dave
PS Don’t forget to pray for Eli and Brielle’s wedding this Saturday. They’re probably feeling a little anxious too.
